Structural Deficiencies that Leave a Tree in Need of Support
There are a few different deficiencies that can be present, leaving your tree without the support that it needs to continue to thrive and not become a safety hazard. Here are some of the problems that would require extra support:
– Age: It is common for older trees to lack the strength and support needed to continue growing straight and true. Sometimes, a tree will also experience damage at some point which can attribute to the lack of structural support.
– Codominant Stems: Sometimes, codominant stems or v-crotches are a weak point for trees as well. This is a weak point in the tree’s connective tissue and can lead to issues as the wider the angle, the weaker the tree.
– Overextension: Limbs that are overextended is another issue that leaves a tree less stable. When this is the case, there will be heavy foliage at the end of these branches, and they will be far more likely to break.
– Weak Anchor: If your tree isn’t properly anchored with deep roots, it will lack the structural support to grow as well. This is usually a result of shallow planting that doesn’t allow the roots to grow deep enough to support the tree.
Different Branch Support Systems
There are two different ways to put in support for your trees to thrive.
– Tree Bracing: If you live in an area where there are often strong winds and severe weather, tree bracing is a great option. This is done using a rigid, static system to provide ongoing support for the tree.
– Tree Cabling: If you have a weak trunk or overextended limbs, an arborist might install a high strength support system called cabling. There are two types of cabling systems, static and dynamic.
